Hands-on Training for High-Demand Careers

The Franklin County Technical School, in partnership with the MassHire Franklin Hampshire Career Center, offers Career and Technical Initiative (CTI) programs designed to open doors to rewarding, high-demand careers right here in our community. These evening programs provide adults with hands-on, industry-relevant training in skilled trades, taught by experienced instructors in professional-grade shop spaces. Whether you’re starting a new career, re-entering the workforce, or expanding your skill set, CTI offers an accessible path to opportunity and advancement.

Thanks to funding from the Massachusetts Workforce Skills Cabinet, these classes are free to qualifying students who are underemployed or unemployed. Eligibility is based on income guidelines set by the Commonwealth Corporation and the Massachusetts Governor's office. For example, in Franklin County, individuals earning less than $49,100 annually may qualify. Accepted documentation to verify eligibility includes utility bills, government mail, or bank statements for residency verification; pay stubs, tax forms, or letters from employers for income verification; and proof of unemployment benefits or employment authorization documents.

Carpentry

Dates: February 24 – May 14, 2026

Days: Monday - Thursday

Time: 4 - 9 p.m.

Tuition: $3,800 - *Free for qualifying students through the CTI grant program

Discover the fundamentals of residential construction in this entry-level course designed to build a foundation for a career in carpentry. Students will learn tool safety, measurement, framing, and finishing techniques while gaining hands-on experience in a shop environment. This course prepares participants for entry-level employment in construction and related building trades.


Electrical

Dates: February 24 – May 14, 2026

Days: Monday - Thursday

Time: 5 - 9 p.m.

Tuition: $3,800 - *Free for qualifying students through the CTI grant program

Gain the essential skills and knowledge needed to begin a career in the electrical field. Students will explore basic electrical theory, wiring methods, safety procedures, and code requirements through both classroom instruction and practical shop projects. This course lays the groundwork for apprenticeships or entry-level work with licensed electricians.


Horticulture

Dates: February 24 – May 14, 2026

Days: Monday - Thursday

Time: 4 - 9 p.m.

Tuition: $3,800 - *Free for qualifying students through the CTI grant program

Learn the principles of plant care, garden design, and sustainable growing practices in this hands-on introduction to horticulture. Students will explore topics such as soil health, plant identification, greenhouse work, and seasonal maintenance. Ideal for anyone interested in landscaping, agriculture, or greenhouse production careers.


Plumbing and Heating

Dates: February 24 – May 14, 2026

Days: Monday - Thursday

Time: 4 - 9 p.m.

Tuition: $3,800 - *Free for qualifying students through the CTI grant program

This foundational course introduces the core skills used in residential and light commercial plumbing and heating systems. Students will learn to read blueprints, use trade-specific tools, and assemble basic piping systems while understanding safety and code compliance. The course prepares participants for entry-level positions or apprenticeships in the plumbing and HVAC fields.


Welding and Metal Fabrication

Dates: February 24 – May 14, 2026

Days: Monday - Thursday

Time: 4 - 9 p.m.

Tuition: $3,800 - *Free for qualifying students through the CTI grant program

Experience the art and precision of metalwork in this entry-level course covering welding processes such as MIG, TIG, and stick welding. Students will gain hands-on practice in fabrication, cutting, and safety procedures while producing real-world projects. Graduates will be prepared for entry-level work in manufacturing, fabrication, or construction environments.

 

*These trainings are free for individuals who meet the qualifications outlined by the Commonwealth Corporation and the Massachusetts Governor's Office. Decisions are made based on the following:

  • Residency: Must be a resident of Massachusetts.
  • Employment Status: Must be unemployed or underemployed.
  • Income Guidelines: Income thresholds vary by county. For example, in Franklin County, individuals earning less than $49,100 annually may qualify.
  • Age: Must be 18 years or older.
  • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
